The Hampton Court Palace Mase is the oldest surviving hedge maze, having been built for King William III and Mary II in 1690.
ハンプトン・コート宮殿の迷路は、1690年にウィリアム3世とメアリー2世のために作られた、現存する最古の生け垣迷路です。
It was designed by royal gardeners George London and Henry Wise.
設計は王室庭師のジョージ・ロンドンとヘンリー・ワイズが担当しました。
The maze covers an area of 0.2 ha (0.5 acres) and the paths are a total length of 800m (0.5 miles).
迷路の面積は0.2ヘクタール (0.5エーカー)、小道の長さは合計800m (0.5 マイル)です。

Hampton Court maze was planted as part of the gardens of William 111 and Mary II in the late 17th century. This makes it over 300 years old and the oldest hedge maze in Great Britain.
ハンプトンコート迷路は、17世紀後半にウィリアム111世とメアリー2世の庭園の一部として植えられました。そのため、300年以上の歴史があり、英国で最も古い生け垣迷路とされています。
The maze was originally part of the Wilderness – which wasn’t as wild as its name suggests. The Wilderness was a formal garden of high hedges where courtiers could wander and get enjoyably lost. They would have followed the same paths that you have today to get to the centre of the maze.
この迷路はもともとウィルダネス（荒野）の一部でしたが、その名前が示すように、それほど荒々しいものではありませんでした。ウィルダネスは、高い生け垣のある正式な庭園で、廷臣たちが迷い込んで楽しむことができる場所でした。迷路の中心部に行くには、現在と同じような道を歩いたことでしょう。
Hampton Court maze was the first puzzle maze in the UK, with a choice of paths, twists and dead ends. Before it, mazes were unicursal (single path) so Hampton Court maze became a curiosity and a great attraction for visitors when the Palace was opened to the public by Queen Victoria in 1838.
ハンプトン・コートの迷路は、英国で最初のパズル迷路で、道や曲がり角、行き止まりを選べるようになっています。それ以前の迷路はユニカル（一本道）だったので、1838年にヴィクトリア女王によって宮殿が一般公開されると、ハンプトン・コート迷路は珍しがられ、観光客にとって大きな魅力となったのです。

This beautiful sculptural picture frame was made by artist blacksmith Craig Knowles. Hampton Court has been famous for its ironwork for centuries, particularly the stunning Tijou Screens in the Privy Garden Craig has been inspired by this tradition and the plants and flowers in the Wilderness.
