The love spoon is an ornately carved spoon, traditionally made from a single piece of wood by young men, as a token of affection towards their sweethearts. The earliest surviving example dates from around 1667, although the tradition probably dates back long before that. The love spoon is thought to have originated from the cawl (soup) spoon. Over generations intricate carvings were added and the spoon become a treasured decorative item to be cherished.
ラブ・スプーンとは、伝統的に若い男性が恋人への愛情の証として一本の木から作る、豪華な彫刻が施されたスプーンのことである。現存する最古の例は1667年頃のものだが、伝統はそれ以前からあったのだろう。ラブ・スプーンの起源はカウル（スープ）スプーンと考えられている。何世代にもわたって複雑な彫刻が施され、スプーンは大切にされる装飾品となった。

The custom of carving and giving Welsh Lovespoons originated in Wales hundreds of years ago. Originally, they were carved by young men and offered to the girls they loved as a token of affection. Lovespoons are given as gifts for Anniversaries, Weddings. Engagements, Valentine’s Day, Births and Birthdays and as a memento of a visit Wales.
