最初から最後まで韻を踏んでいて、素晴らしい。
日本語訳版は、読みやすい語呂に合わせており翻訳の努力が垣間見れる。
英語版には無い言葉遊びが入っており、これはこれでおもしろい。
1、2
A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood.
A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
くらい もりの おくふかく、 ネズミが あるいておりました。
そこへ キツネが やってきて、 ネズミは ごちそうに みえました。
“Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come and have lunch in my underground house.”
「どこいくの、 ちっちゃな ちゃいろい ネズミくん？
じめんの したの ぼくんちで いっしょに おひるを たべないか」
“It’s terribly kind of you. Fox, but no ー
I’m goin to have lunch with a gruffalo.”
「そりゃあ、 ぞっとするほど ごしんせつに キツネくん、 でも、
ぼく… グラファロと おひるを たべる やくそくなんだ。」
“A gruffalo? What’s a gruffalo?”
“A gruffalo! Why, didn’t you know?”
「グラファロ？ なんだい、 グラファロって？」
「グラファロだよ！ きみ、 しらないの？」

“He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws,
And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws.”
「おそろしい きばを はやし、 おそろしい つめ
おそろしい あごには おそろしい はが はえている やつさ」
“Where are you meeting him?”
“Here, by these rocks,
And his favourite food is roasted fox.”
「きみ、 どこで グラファロと あうの？」
「ここだよ、 この いわの そばさ、
グラファロの こうぶつは キツネの やきにくなんだ」
“Roasted fox! I’m off! Fox said.
“Goodbye, little mouse,” and away he sped.
「キツネの やきにく！ ぼくは いく！」と、 キツネ。
「さよなら、 ネズミくん」 キツネは スタコラ にげました。
“Silly old Fox! Doesn’t he know,
There’s no such thing as a gruffalo?”
「やれやれ、 よかった。 しんじてくれた。
グラファロなんて いないのに」
5、6
On went the mouse through the deep dark wood.
An owl saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
くらい もりの おくふかく、 ネズミは あるいていきました。
そこへ フクロウ とんできて、 ネズミは ごちそうに みえました。
“Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come and have tea in my treetop house.”
「どこいくの、 ちっちゃな ちゃいろい ネズミくん？
きの てっぺんの わしんちで いっしょに おやつに しないかい」
“It’s frightfully nice of you. Owl, but no ー
I’m goin to have tea with a gruffalo.”
「そりゃあ、 ふるえがくるほど すてきだな、 でも、
ぼく… グラファロと おやつを たべる やくそくなんだ。」
“A gruffalo? What’s a gruffalo?”
“A gruffalo! Why, didn’t you know?”
「グラファロ？ なんだい、 グラファロって？」
「グラファロだよ！ きみ、 しらないの？」
7、8
“He has knobbly knees, and turned-out toes,
And a poisonous wart at the end of his nose.”
「こぶだらけの ひざ、 あしには かぎづめ
はなの てっぺんに いやな いぼが ある やつさ」
“Where are you meeting him?”
“Here, by this stream,
And his favourite food is owl ice cream.”
「おまえさん、 どこで グラファロと あうのかね？」
「ここだよ、 この おがわの ほとりでさ、
グラファロの こうぶつは フクロウケーキなんだ」
“Owl ice cream? Toowhit toowhoo!
Goodbye, little mouse,” and away Owl flew.
「フクロウケーキだって？ ホッホー！」
「わしは いくよ、 ネズミくん」 フクロウは とんで にげました。
“Silly old Owl! Doesn’t he know,
There’s no such thing as a gruffalo?”
「やれやれ、 こんども たすかった。
グラファロなんて どこにも いないのに」
9、10
On went the mouse through the deep dark wood.
An snake saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.
ふかくて くらい もりの なか、 ネズミは とおっていきました。
そこへ ヘビが あらわれて、 ネズミは ごちそうに みえました。
“Where are you going to, little brown mouse?
Come for a feast in my logpile house.”
「どこいくの、 ちっちゃな ちゃいろい ネズミくん？
まるたを つんだ ぼくんちで いっしょに ごちそう たべないか」
“It’s wonderfully good of you. Snake, but no ー
I’m having a feast with a gruffalo.”
「そりゃあ、 ちも こおるほど いいかんがえ、 でも、
ぼく… グラファロと ごちそう たべる やくそくなんだ。」
“A gruffalo? What’s a gruffalo?”
“A gruffalo! Why, didn’t you know?”
「グラファロ？ なんだい、 グラファロって？」
「グラファロだよ！ きみ、 しらないの？」
11、12
“His eyes are orange, his tongue is black;
He has purple prickles all over his back.”
「おれんじいろの め、 くろい した。
せなかに むらさきいろの とげを はやしている やつさ」
“Where are you meeting him?”
“Here, by this lake,
And his favourite food is scrambled snake.”
「きみ、 どこで グラファロと あうの？」
「ここだよ、 この いけの そばさ、
グラファロの こうぶつは ヘビの かばやきなんだ」
“Scramble snake! It’s time I hid!
Goodbye, little mouse,” and away Snake slid.
「へびの かばやき！ ぼく、 いかなくちゃ！」
「さよなら、 ネズミくん」 ヘビは クネクネ にげました。
“Silly old Snake! Doesn’t he know,
There’s no such thing as a gruffalo…
「やれやれ、 よかった グラファロなんて
てんにも ちにも いないのに…

… Oh!”
…うわお！」
But who is this creature with terrible claws
And terrible teeth in his terrible jaws?
He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes

「ひええ、 たすけて！
グラファロだ！」
15、16
“My favourite food!” the Gruffalo said.
“You’ll taste good on a slice of bread!”
「あ、 おれの だいこうぶつ！」 と、 グラファロ。
「パンに はさんで たべたら、 うまそうだな！」
“Good?” said the mouse. “Don’t call me good!
I’m the scariest creature in this wood.
「うまそうだって？」 と、 ネズミ。 「しつれいな こと、 いうな！
ぼくは もりじゅうで いちばん きけんな どうぶつなんだ。
Just walk behind me and soon you’ll see,
Everyone is afraid of me.”
ぼくに ついてきて みろよ、
みんなが ぼくを おそれて にげだすぞ」
“All right,” said the Gruffalo, bursting with laughter.
“You go ahead and I’ll follow after.”
「いいとも」 グラファロは ふきだしながら いいました。
「ついていって やろうじゃないか」
They walked and walked till the Gruffalo said,
“I hear a hiss in leaves ahead.”
さきへ さきへと あるいて いくと、 グラファロが
「むこうの ほうで しゅうしゅう いうのが きこえるぞ」
17、18
“It’s Snake,” said the mouse. “Why, Snake, hello!”
Snake took one look at the Gruffalo.
「ヘビだ」 と、 ネズミ。 「やあ、 ヘビ、 こんにちは！」
ヘビは、 グラファロを ひとめ みるなり。
“Oh crumbs!” he said, “Goodbye, little mouse,”
And off he slid to his logpile house.
「びっくり しゃっくり それっきり！ さよなら、 ネズミくん」
まるたの あいだに しゅるしゅる にげて いきました。
“You see?” said the mouse. “I told you so.”
“Amazing!” said the Gruffalo.
「どうだい」 と、 ネズミ。 「いった とおりだろ」
「こりゃ、 おどろいた！」 と、 グラファロ。
They walked some more till the Gruffalo said,
“I hear a hoot in the trees ahead.”
もっと さきへ すすんで いくと、 グラファロが、
「きの うえで ホーホー いうのが きこえるぞ」
19、20
“It’s Owl,” said the mouse. “Why, Owl, hello!”
Owl took one look at the Gruffalo.
「フクロウだ」 と、 ネズミ。 「やあ、 フクロウ、 げんきかい？」
フクロウは、 グラファロを ひとめ みるなり。
“Oh dear!” he said, “Goodbye, little mouse,”
And off he flew to his treetop house.
「たまげた こまげた ひよりげた、 さよなら、 ネズミくん」
きの いえに バサバサ すっとび にげました。
“You see?” said the mouse. “I told you so.”
“Astounding!” said the Gruffalo.
「どうだい」 と、 ネズミ。 「いった とおりだろ」
「こりゃ、 ぎょうてん！」 と、 グラファロ。
They walked some more till the Gruffalo said,
“I can hear feet on the path ahead.”
もすこし さきへ あるいて いくと、 グラファロが、
「こみちで こんこん いうのが きこえるぞ」
21、22
“It’s Fox,” said the mouse. “Why, Fox, hello!”
Fox took one look at the Gruffalo.
「キツネだよ」 と、 ネズミ。 「やあ、 キツネ、 どうしてる？」
キツネは、 グラファロを ひとめ みるなり。
“Oh help!” he said, “Goodbye, little mouse,”
And off he ran to his underground house.
「たすけて ほかけて あしかけて、 さよなら、 ネズミくん」
じめんの したの ほらあなに スタコラサッサと にげました。
“Well, Gruffalo,” said the mouse. “You see?
Everyone is afraid of me!
「さあて、 グラファロくん」 と、 ネズミ。 「わかったかい？
ぼくが もりじゅうで いちばん きけんな どうぶつなんだ
But now my tummy’s beginning to rumble.
My favourite food is ー gruffalo crumble!”
ところで、 ぼく、 おなかが すいたな、
ぼくの こうぶつは… グラファロシチューだ！」
“Gruffalo crumble!” the Gruffalo said,
And quick as the wind he turned and fled.
「グラファロシチュー！」 グラファロは さけぶと
あともみず、 はやてのように にげさりました
23、24
All was quiet in the deep dark wood.
The mouse found a nut and the nut was good.
ふかくて くらい もりの なか、
ネズミは ゆっくり くつろいで、 このみを かじりましたとさ。
