The only building in the central area of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park is St Anthony’s Chapel.

Looking more like the gaunt ruin of an ancient castle than a religious building, it stands on a rocky outcrop high above St Margaret’s Loch, commanding excellent views over North Edinburgh, Leith and the River Forth.
宗教的な建物というよりは、古城の廃墟のように見えるこの礼拝堂は、聖マーガレット湖の上にある岩場に建っており、エディンバラ北部、リース、フォース川を見渡すことができます。

For a building whose construction must have been witnessed by people for miles around, surprisingly little is known about the origins of St Anthony’s Chapel. From the 1100s, ownership of the land now forming Holyrood Park was divided between the abbeys at Kelso and Holyrood, and it is thought that the area occupied by the chapel was owned by Kelso Abbey.

Prior to the 16th century, Holyrood Park was held by the Abbeys of Holyrood and Kelso.

St. Anthony’s Chapel stands in the part which probably belonged to Kelso Abbey.
聖アンソニー礼拝堂は、ケルソー修道院に属していたと思われる部分に建っています。

The origin and history of the chapel are obscure, but it was certairily built no later than the early 15th century, as in 1426 it is recorded that the Pope gave money for its repair.
礼拝堂の起源や歴史は不明ですが、1426年にローマ教皇が礼拝堂の修理費を提供したという記録があることから、15世紀初頭に建てられたことは間違いありません。

The chapel may have been linked to the Preceptory of St. Anthony, a skin hospice, which was based in Leith around this time.

The last chaplain is recorded in 1581.
